The City is required to replace lead water service lines to resident's homes.
The State of Michigan changed the Lead and Copper Rule within the Safe Drinking Water Act in 2018 which mandated all cities to replace lead water service lines from the water main into the house of any resident in the City at no cost to the homeowner. The City of Garden City has been very proactive in replacing the lead lines we are aware of. The City has identified approximately 220 lead service lines and 154 have been replaced at no cost to the homeowner. Every known home that has a lead service line has been notified by the City. Not all have responded.
The City of Garden City Water Department will, upon request, send someone to your home to verify whether or not you have lead service lines. For more information about how to check for yourself, visit www.gardencitymi.org/wateradvisory . The City will not replace lead pipes inside a home, only the service line that brings the water to your home. For more information or to have your lines checked, call the Garden City Department of Public Works at 734-793-1800.
