Ride Share Passenger Arrested After Revealing Ride

San Mateo Police Department officers arrested a Daly City resident after the ride share passenger exposed himself and concealed a knife during a ride

San Mateo, CA – On Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at approximately 3:59 p.m., San Mateo Police Department officers responded to the 300 block of N Kingston Street on the report of a ride share passenger who exposed himself to a ride share driver. Officers arrived on scene and located a 23-year-old female victim. The victim picked up her ride share passenger, a suspect who was later identified as Edward Holmes, from the Bridgepointe Shopping Center at approximately 3:45 p.m. As they traveled northbound on Highway 101 towards Holmes’ destination, Holmes began discussing the topic of sex. The victim told Holmes she did not wish to discuss sex with Holmes. Holmes proceeded to expose himself and began masturbating. When the victim became aware of Holmes’ actions, she took the first exit off the highway, Dore Avenue, and ordered Holmes to exit her vehicle. Holmes exited the vehicle, but not before asking for a final time if she wanted to see his genitalia.

SMPD officers acted cleverly and quickly by creating a ruse, which located Holmes nearby at the intersection of Dore Avenue and N Bayshore Boulevard. After the victim identified Holmes as her ride share passenger, Holmes was arrested without incident. A search incident to arrest revealed a steak knife, which was fully concealed, in the right pocket of Holmes’ shorts. The blade on the knife was approximately 5 inches long. Holmes was booked into the San Mateo County Jail for indecent exposure and carrying a concealed dirk or dagger.

Always remember, “If you see something, say something.” We are encouraging our community to utilize security cameras. They are especially helpful in identifying suspicious activity in neighborhoods when cameras are street facing. Our officers regularly canvass for surveillance and you can help us by notifying SMPD where cameras are located in your neighborhood at www.cityofsanmateo.org/NEST.

This remains and open and active investigation.

ARRESTED
Edward Holmes, a 30-year-old Daly City resident
Charges: Indecent exposure (314.1 PC) and Carrying a concealed dirk or dagger (21310 PC)
