The Waldwick Water Department will be flushing hydrants in District 5 again today until 12:00 pm.

WHY DOES THE WATER DEPARTMENT FLUSH FIRE HYDRANTS?
Periodically flushing water mains through fire hydrants is an important maintenance activity. Flushing removes harmless minerals and sediment that collect in the mains and helps to ensure high water quality. These operations also help ensure that hydrants are working properly.
 
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING HYDRANT FLUSHING?
While hydrants are being flushed, residents may temporarily experience low water pressure or discolored water.
 
IS THE WATER SAFE TO DRINK DURING HYDRANT FLUSHING?
Yes. Even though the water may be discolored, it is safe to drink. Compounds such as iron, manganese and other sediments may discolor the water but they don't have negative health effects. Most people prefer to wait until the water is clear before they drink it.
 
CAN I DO LAUNDRY DURING HYDRANT FLUSHING?
Sediment may cause rust-colored stains. Please run your cold water before you do your laundry. If it is discolored, wait for half an hour and try again.
 
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY WATER IS DISCOLORED OR RUSTY?
Running several cold water taps at full force for several minutes will usually flush out sediment or discolored water. You can also run a cold water faucet in the basement. If the water does not run clear after several minutes, wait for half an hour and try again. If the water doesn't run clear after multiple attempts of running your faucet, please call the Borough of Waldwick at 201-652-5300 x240.
 
HOW DO I KNOW WHEN HYDRANT FLUSHING IS COMPLETE?
The Borough will send a notice when hydrant flushing is complete. Residents can also call 201-652-5300 x240 for updates.
