SUSPECT(S): Jose Del Refugi Velazquez, 37-year-old male of Compton, CA

SUMMARY: On Saturday, March 19, 2022, a 34-year-old female met Jose Velazquez in South Gate. The victim and Velazquez drove around in Velasquez’s 2003 Ford Expedition for several hours. Velazquez made a stop in a deserted area of Helendale, sexually assaulted the victim, and then physically assaulted her numerous times causing injuries to her face and body. Velazquez also choked the victim with a cell phone charger cord until she became unconscious. Velazquez fled the scene in his vehicle, leaving the unconscious victim in the deserted area.
On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, Velazquez was located in Los Angeles and arrested by detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department's Barstow Station. Velazquez was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga where he remains in custody on $1,500,000 bail.
