Here is the latest Take Five briefing from the April 19, 2022 meeting of the Mayor and Borough Council.
1. Proclamation: The Mayor issued a proclamation supporting the designation of April 2022 National Arab American Heritage Month. For over a century, Arab Americans have been making valuable contributions to virtually every aspect of American Society: in medicine, law, business, education, technology, government, military service, and culture. They join other Americans who strive for a peaceful and diverse society, where every individual is treated equally and feels safe.
2. Town Wide Writing Contest: The Highland Park Arts Commission is piloting a creative writing program in partnership with the Highland Park Recreation Department. The “250/24 Writing Contest” is open to all residents of any age. Registrants will have to write a story that is 250 words or less and will only have 24 hours to do so once receiving their assignment. Residents may register online at www.HighlandParkRec.com and a writing assignment will be sent out at midnight on Saturday, April 30th. For more information, click here.
3. No. 4th Avenue & Raritan Avenue: In an effort to increase pedestrian and traffic safety, the NJDOT has installed signs at the intersection of No. 4th & Raritan Avenues. Left turns onto Raritan Avenue are now prohibited at all times. Expect to see police officers in the area to assist with educating the public about the new traffic pattern.
4. Park Partners: Highland Park’s successful Park Partners give-back grant program is back! The Borough will begin accepting applications for its 2022 Park Partners grants of up to $2,000 on May 1st. Projects must fit into one or more of the following categories: 1. Environment, 2. Arts 3.Culture & Diversity, 4. Safety, Universal Access, or Health & Wellness, and 5. Highland Park High School class/club project. Residents will cast their votes for their favorite projects during an exhibition on Sunday, June 12, 2022. Applications can be found on the Borough’s website and should be submitted no later than June 7th at 1:00 p.m.
5. No Smoking Ordinance Amendment: An ordinance amending the Highland Park Borough Code and prohibiting smoking in any designated street closure right-of-way set aside for public gatherings, such as “Town Tables”, was introduced on first reading. The ordinance will be voted on for 2nd reading at the Tuesday, May 3rd Council Meeting.
