SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at 1:19 pm, a male adult and a female adult entered Uptown Pets. The male forced open a secured reptile habitat and stole a red Ambanja Panther Chameleon, worth over $900, while the female distracted store employees. The male and female left the store without paying for the chameleon. Store employees recognized the suspects as prior patrons. Other reptiles were found missing after the suspects’ previous visits as well. The store manager reviewed the video surveillance footage and saw the male suspect steal the chameleon. Deputy Stephanie Olvera documented the original theft, viewed the footage, and used the city’s cameras to identify the suspect’s vehicle.
On Friday, April 22, 2022, the male suspect was identified as Darrien Green. Deputy Olvera and Detective Daniel Shelton interviewed and arrested Green in Beaumont. The chameleon was recovered at a residence in Cabazon. The chameleon lost color but was otherwise healthy. A search of Green’s residence recovered two previously stolen Sulcata Tortoises. All three reptiles were returned to Uptown Pets. Green was booked into the Central Detention Center for PC 459 – Burglary.
