Ripley/Evans Hydrant Flushing
The City of Ripley will be flushing fire hydrants from April 24 through April 29. Hydrants in the Ripley city limits will be opened during the evening hours beginning at 10 p.m. Sunday, April 24 and ending Thursday night April 28. Hydrants in Evans will be flushed during daylight hours beginning Monday, April 25 and ending Friday, April 29.
Twice a year, normally in Spring and Fall, the hydrants are flushed over the course of one week.
The City of Ripley adheres to a method of unidirectional flushing to direct and control the removal of sediments that may have collected in the system. This accumulation of minerals and sediments in water mains is a natural process and best remedied by flushing.
Flushing hydrants can sometimes be frustrating to residents, but it is essential to ensure clean and safe water as well as the integrity of the distribution system. While it may appear wasteful, this process is the most effective way to keep drinking water safe, clean and pleasant tasting.
If during this week you see a fire hydrant running for an extended period, don’t be alarmed. It is the regularly scheduled flushing of the water distribution system.
