The following is a summary of criminal activity in El Cerrito April 25th to April 28, 2022.

The following is a summary of criminal activity in El Cerrito. It does not include all crimes. It also does not include non-criminal events such as missing persons, traffic collisions, non-criminal deaths, non-criminal disputes, nor many other police activities that do not result in arrest.

April 29th

License plate theft – 800 block of Elm St. 
An officer reports that an unknown suspect stole the victim’s license plate. 
 
April 30th

Attempt Grand Theft – 1600 block of Navellier Street;
At 3:10 am officers were sent to the report that someone had just scared off people that were attempting to steal the catalytic converter from a vehicle. 

Shoplift, Battery – Safeway, 11450 San Pablo Ave. 
A 21-year-old transient man stole property from the store during the morning hours.  He returned again in the afternoon and attempted to steal a bottle of alcohol.  However, this time he was severely intoxicated and combative with store security officers.  He spat on one of the security officers and took a fighting stance.  The security guard defended himself with pepper spray, incapacitating the suspect.  The man was transported to the hospital due to his level of intoxication and pepper spray exposure. 

Attempted residential burglary – 7600 block of Potrero Ave.  
An officer reports that an unknown suspect entered the yard of the victim’s residence and pulled off a window screen, then tried to slide open the window.  The suspect also went through the victim’s mail and attempted to pry open the front door.  He fled when he noticed a neighbor watching him.  He then was spotted walking through a yard in the 1100 block of Arlington Blvd. approximately 30 minutes later. 

Shoplift – Ross, 11545 San Pablo Ave. 
An officer reports that an unknown suspect entered Ross and stole $600 worth of clothing and a shovel.
 
May 1st

Grand Theft – 1600 block of Navellier Street;
At 4:09 am officers were sent to the report that someone had just stolen the catalytic converter from a vehicle. 

Possession of stolen Property – Potrero Avenue;
At 4:26 am an officer pulled over a vehicle and while speaking to the occupants could see illegal items inside.  The vehicle was searched and drug paraphernalia, suspected stolen property, and burglary tools were located inside.  Both occupants were arrested, issued citations for the illegal items and released.     

Grand Theft – Foot Locker, 430 El Cerrito Plaza
An officer reports that an unknown suspect entered the business with her juvenile daughter and stole approximately $1000 worth of clothing.  The suspect fled in a white vehicle. 
 
Armed carjacking – Safeway, 11450 San Pablo Ave. 
An officer reports that the victim left his vehicle running with his 15-year-old son seated in the passenger seat.  An unknown suspect opened the driver’s door and sat down in the driver’s seat.  The suspect produced a handgun and told the juvenile to get out.  The juvenile ran into the store and found his father.  The suspect fled the parking lot in the victim’s vehicle. 
 
May 2nd
Battery – 9901 San Pablo Ave. 
An officer reports that the victim accidentally opened his vehicle door and struck the vehicle next to his.  That vehicle’s owner retaliated by throwing a bowl of food at the victim, striking him in the neck. 

Attempted grand theft – Chase, 9950 San Pablo Ave. 
The bank manager became suspicious when an elderly woman asked to withdraw a large sum of money from her account.  The bank manager was able to ascertain that the woman was told to withdraw the money in response to a phone scam.  The manager denied the withdrawal request and called police.
