Four arrested during recent DUI Checkpoint

On the evening of April 29th, the Berkeley Police Department conducted a DUI/CDL checkpoint on San Pablo Avenue near Cedar Street between 9 pm and 1:30 am.

Joining in the effort were officers from the Albany PD, Piedmont PD, UC Berkeley PD, and volunteers from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

The checkpoint got underway shortly before 9 pm, and was operational until about 1:30 am.  During this period, 777 drivers were contacted.  Of those contacted:

  • 32 field sobriety tests were conducted, 4 drivers were arrested for DUI
  • 5 drivers were cited for having a suspended license
  • 4 drivers were cited for being unlicensed
  • 3 drivers were cited for not having their license with them, and
  • 1 driver was cited for not having their child in child restraint.
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.  According to the City of Berkeley 2020-2021 Vision Zero Annual Report, both San Pablo Avenue and Cedar Street are described as high-injury streets.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
