Coronavirus (COVID-19) Seven Hundred, Ninety-Fifth Update, Wednesday, May 11, 2022
Albany County’s COVID-19 dashboard reported today that there were 233 new positive cases overnight in the County, which raised the County’s COVID-19 cumulative pandemic total to 68,999 positive cases. The County’s seven-day average of new daily positive cases increased from 217.7 cases to 219.9. The number of County residents in the hospital overnight due to COVID-19 symptoms decreased by seven to 44 patients, with three patients in the ICU. The County reported the death of a resident yesterday which raised the County’s pandemic death to 554. The County Executive will likely provide details about this death in his next update on Friday.
The State’s COVID-19 website reported that yesterday’s results for 109,960 tests Statewide were 10,087 or 9.0% positive, with the seven-day average remaining at 7.2%. The Capital Region had 4,300 tests of which 635 or 16.1% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 12.4%. The County had 1,099 tests of which 148 or 15.3% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 14.0%.
Governor Kathy Hochul reported today the State’s positive rate for tests yesterday (9.02%), hospitalizations (2,358, -11), new COVID-19 hospital admissions (445), ICU patients (222, +5), intubations (94, +3), and deaths (21).
In another step towards a pre-pandemic status, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and European Center for Disease Prevention and Control announced that they will no longer recommend wearing face masks on planes and in airports. The announcement ended a two-year requirement. It follows last week’s statement by the CDC that recommends facemasks in public transportation and transportation hubs, and its appeal of a recent court decision that voided the nationwide facemask mandate.
The forecasted sunny and warm weather this weekend should be a perfect backdrop for Garden Education Day on this upcoming Saturday from 9am to 1pm at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 24 Martin Road in Voorheesville. In addition to displays and educational materials on gardening tips, there will be plant sales of tomatoes, vegetables, herbs, annuals, perennials, and much more. You can also have a free pH soil test and chat with a master gardener. Here is a link to this “rain or shine” event. At the same event, master gardeners compost crafters are selling stained glass garden markers, sun-catchers, and other garden crafts.
Thank you for staying safe and calm.
