Death Investigation leads to Arrest
On Monday, May 2, 2022, at approximately 6:30 PM, members of the Wildwood Police Department Uniform Patrol Division, along with members of the Wildwood Fire Department, responded to the 100 East block of Pine Avenue, located in the City of Wildwood, in connection to a civilian report of a possible narcotics overdose.
During the course of the investigation, responding officers were directed to an interior bathroom of a residence located in the 100 East Block of Pine Avenue, where they located an incapacitated and unresponsive male subject. During the medical assessment, Wildwood Fire / Rescue personnel provided lifesaving measures for an extensive period of time. Eventually, these measures were unsuccessful and the victim was eventually pronounced deceased. As the on-scene investigation continued, evidence specific to the narcotics overdose was seized, for possible future evidential value.
During the developing investigation by members of the Wildwood Police Department Detective Division and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, a court authorized search warrant was executed at a residence located in the 400 West Block of Garfield Avenue, located in the City of Wildwood, which was identified as having a nexus to the active investigation.
As a result of the physical search of the premises, evidential properties specific to the narcotics overdose was located and seized in relation to the investigation. As a result of the totality of the circumstances of the investigation, Daniel Corkery, an 18-year-old unemployed male, currently residing in the City of Wildwood, was arrested and charged with the following criminal charge. Strict Liability for Drug Educed Death (a crime of the first degree).
As a result of the issuance of the criminal charge, Daniel Corkery was incarcerated at the Cape May County Correctional Center in accordance with the Attorney General Guidelines, promulgated in connection with the Criminal Justice Bail Reform Policies and Directives. The defendant was charged after a finding of probable cause and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
