Coronavirus (COVID-19) Seven Hundred, Ninety-Seventh Update, Friday, May 13, 2022

In a press release today, Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy reported that there were 242 new positive cases overnight in the County, which raised the County’s COVID-19 cumulative pandemic total to 69,543 positive cases.  The County’s seven-day average of new daily positive cases decreased from 231.1 to 219.2.  The number of County residents in the hospital overnight due to COVID-19 symptoms remained at 46 patients, with two patients in the ICU.  The County’s pandemic death toll remained at 555.  The County Executive reported that the two COVID-19 related deaths of County residents since his Tuesday update were a man in his 60’s and woman over 100 years of age.

The County Executive added:

Every death is a tragedy, and my condolences go out to the families who lost loved ones to COVID complications over the last few days. = The Coronavirus continues to spread rapidly, largely driven by the highly contagious variants, and it is still a threat.  However, I’m heartened to see that hospitalizations in Albany County remain under control for now, which is the more important indicator.

State DOH reported that the County’s rate for one vaccine dose as of yesterday was 81.8% of the County’s total population and 91.1% of the adult population, and the County’s rate for full-vaccination was 74.8% of the total population, and for boosters was 73.2% of the eligible population.  The State’s rate for one dose was 90.3% for the total population and 95.0% of adults, and the State’s rate for full-vaccination was 77.1% for the total population, and for boosters was 55.5% of the eligible population.

The State’s COVID-19 website reported that yesterday’s results for 204,032 tests Statewide were 11,486 or 5.1% positive, with the seven-day average decreasing to 7.1%.  The Capital Region had 7,196 tests of which 750 or 10.1% were positive, with the seven-day average remaining at 12.3%.  The County had 1,605 tests of which 180 or 11.3% were positive, with the seven-day average decreasing to 13.3%.
Governor Kathy Hochul reported today the State’s positive rate for tests yesterday (5.06%), hospitalizations (2,340, +9), new COVID-19 hospital admissions (471), ICU patients (248, +23), intubations (92, -9), and deaths (25).  The Governor also noted that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported that Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road had record ridership this week at the highest levels since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Metro-North’s number was 61% of its 2019 daily average and the LIRR was 62% of its 2019 daily average.

The CDC marked a very sobering date as the nation approached the tragic milestone of one million lives lost to COVID-19.  The first recorded  COVID-19 death in the nation was in mid-January 2020.  Since then, one million Americans have perished.  The CDC also noted that, by October 2021, more than 140,000 children had lost a parent or caregiver to COVID-19, and today that number has risen to more than 241,000.

The CDC’s map of community level spread shows for the fourth consecutive week that Albany County is at a “high” level at which the CDC recommends the wearing of facemasks in public indoor spaces.  As of yesterday, there are 137 (4.25%) counties, districts, or territories with a high community level, 453 (14.07%) counties with a medium community level, and 2,630 (81.68%) counties with a low community level.

As Russia, for no justification, pursues its brutal invasion of Ukraine, I receive inquiries from residents on how they can help in responding to this humanitarian crisis.  At the community level, 518Ukrainians , a group of local Ukrainian churches, collects both monetary donations online or by mail and accepts dropped off items, including medical supplies and equipment, tactical supplies, sleeping supplies, baby items, tools, and toiletries.  No food or clothing is needed at this time.

I hope that you have an enjoyable and relaxing weekend.  The weather looks perfect for most summer outdoor activities, with maybe swimming.

Thank you for staying safe and calm.
