A Message From Chief David Harkins: National Police Week and National Peace Officers Memorial Day

"The Gloucester Township Police Department joins the community to celebrate the sacrifices and commitment of law enforcement throughout our great nation. National Police Week is celebrated May 15-21 this year, with a special somber remembrance on National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15.

Our commitment to community policing has never been stronger. As we transition back from the pandemic, we are pleased to get back to normal. We are glad to have 24 graduates complete the Gloucester Township Police Department Citizens Police Academy. We are holding our Bike Rodeo and Neighborhood Watch Dog Walker Event for the first time in 3 years. We will celebrate Gloucester Township Day on Saturday, June 4, 2022. We will also have multiple sessions of our Junior Police Academy scheduled for this summer, and we are thrilled to be having our award winning National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 2.

It is our duty to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in law enforcement. We must never forget what Peace Officers Memorial Day is all about. We honor those who have fallen, by our promise to “Never Forget”, and by putting on our badge and gear to serve as they would serve. We are very proud to be represented on the Police Unity Tour by eight of our Officers who ride bicycles from Cape May to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC to honor fallen officers.

We will be honoring the great work of the Gloucester Township Police Department, our law enforcement partners, and several citizens at our annual Awards Night on May 19, 2022 at 7:00 PM at the Camden County College, Blackwood Campus, Dennis Flyer Theater. This is a wonderful event that is open to the public.

On behalf of all the men and women of the Gloucester Township Police Department, I thank the community of Gloucester Township for the tremendous support that we receive. We are here to serve with our core values of “Compassion – Courage – Honesty – Respect – Fairness – Integrity”. We are called to be Servant Leaders of our community, and the Gloucester Township Police Department takes this responsibility seriously.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8

I am proud to be a police officer. I am proud to serve side by side with the Officers, Dispatchers, and Professional Staff of the Gloucester Township Police Department, who will answer the call when needed.
