Sunday, May 15th proclaimed by President Kennedy in 1962 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day leads into National Police Week
In honor of National Police Week - Sunday, May 15 – Saturday, May 21, 2022, Los Altos Police Officers will be wearing black mourning bands over their badges in honor of all fallen peace officers.
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
In 2021, there were 616 line of duty deaths reported, and already 101 line of duty deaths reported for 2022. The line of duty death numbers include Covid-19 related medical deaths.
