NO OPEN BURNING ALLOWED: Burn Permits are not being issued in Newaygo Co due to very high fire danger. Please do not burn.
VERY HIGH to EXTREME Fire Danger currently exists in Newaygo County. The relatively mild, breezy conditions along with low humidity levels will lead to an elevated fire danger risk today.
This is a reminder, there is NO OPEN BURNING permitted by the Department of Natural Resources in Newaygo County right now. “Open burning” is the burning of unwanted materials such as paper, trees, brush, leaves, grass, and other debris where smoke and other emissions are released directly into the air. Contained, recreational campfires are still allowed.
YOU CAN BE FINED FOR OPEN BURNING
Under Part 515 of Act 451 - The prevention and suppression of Forest Fires, Section 324.51512: Violation of Part or Rule; Penalty - Any person who violates this part or any rule promulgated under this part is guilty of a misdemeanor. Any person convicted of violating section 51510 is guilty of a felony and upon conviction shall be imprisoned for not more than 10 years or fined not more than $10,000.00, or both.
In the northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula, permits are issued through the DNR’s website Michigan.gov/BurnPermit. Residents are encouraged to frequently check the website to see when restrictions are lifted.
