Bike Safety Tips

As warm weather returns, the Muskegon Police Department reminds bicyclists of the following tips.

Bicyclists should:
-Ride with traffic and follow the rules of the road.
-Use hand signals when turning or stopping.
-Obey traffic signals, signs, and markings.
-When dark, a white light on the front and rear red reflector is required.
-Ride on the trail, paved shoulder, bike lane, or bike route.
-Be visible: wear appropriate high visibility safety gear, including a helmet.
-Watch for debris that might make you fall or swerve.
-Watch for turning traffic.

Sidewalks:
-Bicyclists are not required to use sidewalks or side paths.
-Sidewalks themselves pose dangers to bicyclists. Uneven surfaces, gaps, and pedestrians make sidewalks difficult and dangerous for bicycles to navigate.

If you must ride on a sidewalk:
-Yield to pedestrians and walk bikes in crowded areas.
-Provide an audible warning with a bell or call out “passing on your left”.
-Watch for distracted motorists/pedestrians; never assume they see you.
-Ride with the direction of traffic (on the right side of the road).
-Ride at a cautious speed. Stop and yield at intersections like a pedestrian.

Local ordinance rules:
-Motorists must give bicyclists at least 5 feet of space when passing.
-Bicyclists should not ride abreast on sidewalks except when passing.
-Electric bikes may be operated on local roads, public parks, and the bike path.
-Electric bikes shall not be operated on or alongside any sidewalk.
