Coronavirus (COVID-19) Eight Hundredth Update. Monday, May 16, 2022
Albany County’s COVID-19 Dashboard reported that there were 150 new positive cases overnight in the County, which raised the County’s COVID-19 cumulative pandemic total to 70,118 positive cases. The County’s seven-day average of new daily positive cases decreased from 215.6 to 208.8 cases. The number of County residents in the hospital overnight due to COVID-19 symptoms increased by three to 52 patients, with two patients in the ICU. The County’s pandemic death toll remained at 556.
The State’s COVID-19 website reported that yesterday’s results for 66,348 tests Statewide were 6,912 or 10.0% positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 7.3%. The Capital Region had 3,233 tests of which 416 or 12.9% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 12.4%. The County had 731 tests of which 123 or 16.6% were positive, with the seven-day average decreasing to 13.3%.
In a press release, Governor Kathy Hochul reported the State’s positive rate for tests yesterday (10.01%), hospitalizations (2,497, +124), new COVID-19 hospital admissions (396), ICU patients (233, -2), intubations (91, -1), and deaths (30).
In case you missed it, the Federal government is now offering a third opportunity to order COVID-19 home tests for delivery. I know that many residents took advantage of the prior two opportunities, and that home tests are becoming regular occurrences. As with the prior orders, this third order will be delivered by the Post Office. Each order now includes eight rapid antigen COVID-19 tests in two separate packages (four tests per package), with each having its own tracking number.
I also thank the employees of the Highway, Water, Building and Police Departments for addressing flooded roads, sink holes, overflowing stormwater drains, and other difficulties caused by yesterday’s torrential downpours in large swaths of the Town, including 1.5 inches in 30 minutes at the Town golf course. We will hopefully dodge a similar rainfall tonight.
Governor Hochul last evening signed Executive Order No. 11.6 which continued, through June 14, the State’s pandemic state of emergency as set forth in Executive Order 11, and also continued the suspensions and modifications of law contained in Executive Orders 11, 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, and 11.5. I have re-read these Orders but I think that this latest Order continues pandemic related relief measures, including the option of local public bodies to forego the Open Meetings Law and hold virtual public meetings.
Today’s update marks another milestone during a more than 26-month long global pandemic. I would not have predicted back with the first update on March 10, 2020, that there would be 800 consecutive daily updates and counting. I thank the thousands of residents who have expressed appreciation for this effort and I continue to hear from many that they look for the update each day. I am optimistic and confident that the pandemic, with the heroic efforts of scientists and health care professionals, is nearing its end, and that there won’t be postings of any four-digit consecutive updates.
