Coronavirus (COVID-19) Eight Hundred First Update, Tuesday, May 17, 2022

In a press release today, Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy reported that there were 193 new positive cases overnight in the County, which raised the County’s COVID-19 cumulative pandemic total to 70,311 positive cases.  The County’s seven-day average of new daily positive cases increased from 208.8 to 220.7 cases.  The number of County residents in the hospital overnight due to COVID-19 symptoms remained at 52 patients, with two patients in the ICU.  The County’s pandemic death toll remained at 556.  The County Executive stated that the death of a County resident since his last update was a man in his 50’s.

State DOH reported that the County’s rate for one vaccine dose as of yesterday was 81.9% of the County’s total population and 91.4% of the adult population, and the County’s rate for full-vaccination was 74.4% of the total population, and for boosters was 73.9% of the eligible population.  The State’s rate for one dose was 90.4% for the total population and 95.0% of adults, and the State’s rate for full-vaccination was 77.2% for the total population, and for boosters was 55.5% of the eligible population.

The State’s COVID-19 website reported that yesterday’s results for 86,429 tests Statewide were 8,647 or 9.4% positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 7.7%.  The Capital Region had 2,971 tests of which 455 or 14.0% were positive, with the seven-day average decreasing to 12.3%.  The County had 835 tests of which 140 or 16.1% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 13.4%.

In a news release today, the FDA today authorized booster shots of Pfizer’s vaccine for children ages 5 to 11.  The FDA Commissioner stated:

While it has largely been the case that COVID-19 tends to be less severe in children than adults, the omicron wave has seen more kids getting sick with the disease and being hospitalized, and children may also experience longer term effects, even following initially mild disease.

The CDC’s Advisory Board will review the FDA’s authorization next week, with the final approval by the CDC Director expected days later.
In a press release, Governor Kathy Hochul reported the State’s positive rate for tests yesterday (9.42%), hospitalizations (2,649, +152), new COVID-19 hospital admissions (401), ICU patients (245, +12), intubations (95, +4), and deaths (24).

The Governor added:

Today, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the first COVID-19 booster dose for five to 11 year olds.  Following approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New Yorkers will be able to safely provide this life-saving tool to their children.  In the meantime, I am calling on our parents and guardians to do what they can to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.  That includes getting boosted, if you haven’t already.  Let’s continue to work together and take care of one another, New York.

This afternoon, the NYC Health Commissioner advised that the City was at a “high alert” level for COVID-19 infection and that all individuals, regardless of vaccination status or past COVID-19 infection, should wear a face mask at all times “when indoors and in a public setting, including at groceries, building lobbies, offices, stores, and other common or shared spaces where individuals may interact such as restrooms, hallways, elevators, and meeting rooms.”  The health advisory also advised that persons with an increased risk for severe illness, including unvaccinated children under age 5 and people over age 65, should avoid nonessential indoor gatherings and crowded settings.

Albany County, and most of upstate counties, have already been at CDC’s “high” level of community spread for more than a month.   At CDC’s “high” level, the wearing of facemasks in indoor public settings is encouraged.

To celebrate National EMS week, the Town EMS is posting videos and messages which feature EMS staff explaining different job tasks and helpful safety tips.  Please take the time to learn more about the paramedics and EMTs who serve our community.  You can also learn about how the EMS Department provides on-site classes and certified training of new EMTs who will soon join the ranks of response agencies in our region.  These efforts are among many reasons why the Town EMS Department was recognized by State DOH as the "New York State EMS Agency of the Year."

Thank you for staying safe and calm.
