Coronavirus (COVID-19) Eight Hundred Second Update, Wednesday, May 18, 2022

Albany County's COVID-19 Dashboard reported that there were 241 new positive cases overnight in the County, which raised the County’s COVID-19 cumulative pandemic total to 70,311 positive cases.  The County’s seven-day average of new daily positive cases increased from 220.7 to 224.4 cases.  The number of County residents in the hospital overnight due to COVID-19 symptoms remained at 52 patients, with two patients in the ICU.  The County’s pandemic death toll remained at 556.

State DOH reported that the County’s rate for one vaccine dose as of yesterday was 81.9% of the County’s total population and 91.4% of the adult population, and the County’s rate for full-vaccination was 74.4% of the total population, and for boosters was 74.0% of the eligible population.  The State’s rate for one dose was 90.4% for the total population and 95.0% of adults, and the State’s rate for full-vaccination was 77.2% for the total population, and for boosters was 55.5% of the eligible population.

The State’s COVID-19 website reported that yesterday’s results for 117,484 tests Statewide were 10,320 or 8.3% positive, with the seven-day average decreasing to 7.6%.  The Capital Region had 3,729 tests of which 603 or 17.8% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 12.4%.  The County had 1,038 tests of which 172 or 18.4% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 13.7%.

In a press release, Governor Kathy Hochul reported the State’s positive rate for tests yesterday (8.27%), hospitalizations (2,705, +56), new COVID-19 hospital admissions (535), ICU patients (247, +2), intubations (96, +1), and deaths (19).

The CDC has updated its COVID-19 guidance for domestic travel by urging travelers, regardless of vaccination status, to take a test close to departure.  The CDC recommends that anyone traveling within the country should consider “getting tested as close to the time of departure as possible,” but not more than three days ahead of a trip. The CDC’s prior guidance only recommended testing before domestic travel for persons not up to date on vaccinations.

The CDC warned today that over one-third of Americans are now residing in counties where the community spread of COVID-19 is at a “high” level and urged those residents to wear a facemask in indoor public settings.   The CDC Director said that data showed the nation’s seven-day average of hospital COVID-19 admissions increased by 20% in one week.  She added that: “We urge local leaders to encourage the use of prevention strategies like masking in public indoor settings and increasing access to testing and treatment for individuals.”

Tomorrow evening at 7:30pm, the Guilderland Historical Society is presenting a virtual Zoom event by its president Bill Johnson on how he researched the history of his Altamont home built in 1889, and its original owner James Bleecker Groot.  The seminar will share methods and sources of information that can be used to explore houses and properties, including your own property before a house was built on it.

Thank you for staying safe and calm.
