El Cerrito Police Department Case #2022-0000980
On May 18th, at 9:04 am, the El Cerrito Police Department responded to the 900 block of King Drive on the report of a home invasion robbery that had just occurred. The suspects were reported as armed with firearms and had forced their way into the victim's home. During the robbery, one of the suspects fired a round from a handgun. The victim was able to access a weapon and defend himself and the suspects fled the residence. As responding officers arrived on scene, they observed a vehicle leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. As the driver fled the area, he was involved in two property damage hit and run collisions. A vehicle pursuit was initiated which ultimately ended on Interstate 80 near Central Avenue when the driver abandoned the vehicle. The driver, a twenty-eight-year-old Oakland man fled across westbound Interstate 80 through heavy traffic but was safely taken into custody by pursuing officers. He was later determined to be on parole with an ankle monitor. He was booked into the Contra Costa County jail on a parole violation, felony evasion, and conspiracy charges.
Meanwhile, the two other suspects fled through the neighborhood shedding clothing, climbing fences, and running through backyards. A search of the area was conducted with the assistance of patrol and canine units from the Richmond and San Pablo Police Departments as well as the CHP aircraft. During the search, El Cerrito High School was placed on lockdown as a safety precaution. The suspects are not believed to be associated with El Cerrito High School. The Department received a report that two community members were confronted by the suspects. Two firearms were recovered on the route where the suspects fled. One of the second suspects was located at approx. 2:30 pm after crawling out of a utility culvert and was taken into custody. This subject a 28-year-old Oakland man was later determined to be wanted on Post Community Supervised Release (PRCS) violation. He suffered injuries during the commission of the crime and was transported to a local medical facility for treatment. The third subject was not located. Detectives are following up on this subject’s identity.
The Police Department has no further information to release at this time, as the investigation is ongoing.
