Update from Mayor Bhalla on COVID-19 (5/22); City to host pediatric booster clinic Tuesday for children ages 5 and up

Below is an update on COVID-19 from Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla 

Last week, the CDC and FDA authorized Pfizer COVID-19 booster shots for children ages 5 – 11 who completed their primary series of the vaccine at least five months ago. As such, the City of Hoboken will host a special booster clinic for these newly eligible residents on Tuesday, May 24, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 605 Jackson Street. The Clinic is made possible through a partnership between the Hoboken Health Department and Medicine Man Pharmacy & Compounding. 
To make a required appointment, go to www.hobokennj.gov/vaccine.   

The Hoboken Health Department reports the following COVID-19 cases:      

May 14: 36
May 15: 12 
May 16: 13
May 17: 41
May 18: 36
May 19: 82
May 20: 47  

There have been a total of 11,499 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hoboken and 65 fatalities since the pandemic began.  

Hoboken University Medical Center is currently treating five individuals with COVID-19. One of these patients is a Hoboken resident who did not receive their booster dose of the vaccine.  

Update from the Hoboken Health Department     

  • Cases are high, especially in schools and childcare centers.    
  • Cases are associated with community widespread in schools, daycare, social gatherings, travel, and work    
  • Commonly observed symptoms are a sore throat, fever, body aches, and congestion.    
  • Our regional COVID Activity Level Index (CALI) score is currently “High Risk”

Vaccination rate update

Below is the vaccination rate for Hoboken:

All ages: 95% (first dose)
12 and over: 99% (first dose)
18 and over: 96% (first dose)
30 and over: nearly 100% (first dose)
65 and over: nearly 100% (first dose)

All ages: 82% (second dose)
12 and over: 85% (second dose)
18 and over: 82% (second dose)
30 and over: 98% (second dose)
65 and over: nearly 100% (second dose)

The state has not provided municipalities with booster numbers.  

Clinic Schedule 

The City offers COVID-19 testing at City clinics through a partnership with Medicine Man Pharmacy & Compounding. To check weekly testing clinic schedules, go to www.hobokennj.gov/testing.   

As stated above, the City will host an additional booster clinic this week on Tuesday, May 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 605 Jackson St. This clinic will offer pediatric Pfizer booster shots for children between 5 and 11 years old and second Pfizer and Moderna boosters for those over 50 years old. The Pfizer vaccine is recommended for anyone eligible no matter the original vaccine dose. Please make a required appointment at www.hobokennj.gov/vaccine.  

As previously announced, the City will also host a pop-up booster clinic on Monday, May 23 for residents over the age of 50. The clinic will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 5 Church Towers and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 15 Church Towers. Individuals 50 years old and older who received their initial booster dose at least four months ago are eligible for an additional booster. The clinic, made possible through a partnership with Hoboken Family Pharmacy, is open to all eligible residents regardless of whether they live in the buildings.

At-home testing       
At-home rapid tests are available through the federal government. Every home in the U.S. is eligible to order free at-⁠home COVID-⁠19 antigen tests through the US Postal Service.
