Coronavirus (COVID-19) Eight Hundred Sixth Update, Sunday, May 22, 2022

Albany County’s COVID-19 Dashboard reported that there were 153 new positive cases overnight in the County, which raised the County’s COVID-19 cumulative pandemic total to 71,417 positive cases.  The County’s seven-day average of new daily positive cases decreased from 220.2 to 218.6 cases.  The number of County residents in the hospital overnight due to COVID-19 symptoms decreased by five to 39 patients, with two patients in the ICU.  The County reported the deaths of two County residents overnight which raised the County’s pandemic death toll to 561.   The County Executive will provide details about the five deaths over the weekend in his update on Tuesday.

State DOH reported that the County’s rate for one vaccine dose as of yesterday was 81.4% of the County’s total population and 91.6% of the adult population, and the County’s rate for full-vaccination was 74.4% of the total population, and for boosters was 74.5% of the eligible population.  The State’s rate for one dose was 90.5% for the total population and 95.0% of adults, and the State’s rate for full-vaccination was 77.3% for the total population, and for boosters was 55.5% of the eligible population.

The State’s COVID-19 website reported that yesterday’s results for 119,553 tests Statewide were 8,200 or 6.4% positive, with the seven-day average decreasing to 8.1%.  The Capital Region had 4,169 tests of which 404 or 9.7% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 12.2%.  The County had 1,093 tests of which 110 or 10.6% were positive, with the seven-day average increasing to 14.0%.

The State’s other COVID-19 data included the State’s positive rate for tests yesterday (6.44%), hospitalizations (2,575, -9), new COVID-19 hospital admissions (392), ICU patients (247, -7), intubations (93, +2), and deaths (24).

The CDC reported that both cases and hospitalizations continued to rise last week as the country marked one million deaths from COVID-19.  While about 54% of the nation’s population has low COVID-19 Community Levels, the number of counties with medium and high levels is increasing.

The CDC also reported what we have known for more than a year that people with up to date vaccinations have much lower risks of serious illness and death from COVID-19 than unvaccinated people.  CDC’s COVID Data Tracker shows that in March 2022, unvaccinated adults were about 5 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than persons with up to date vaccinations and that unvaccinated people ages 12 years and older were 17 times more likely to die of COVID-19 than those who were up to date.
