SMPD Arrests Bus Stop Homicide Suspect

San Mateo, CA – The San Mateo Police Department Criminal Investigations Bureau worked persistently to identify, to locate, and to arrest one suspect, Ricardo Bibbs, a 56-year-old transient, in connection with a fatal stabbing on May 14, 2022 at a SamTrans bus stop.

On Saturday, May 14, 2022, at approximately 6:48 a.m., San Mateo Police Department patrol officers were dispatched to the SamTrans bus stop located at 11 West Hillsdale Boulevard on the report of a man slumped over a bench. Upon arrival, officers located a 48-year-old male, identified as Tedrick Towns, unresponsive with a pool of blood underneath him. Tragically, Towns succumbed to his injury and was pronounced dead on scene.

SMPD detectives immediately initiated a homicide investigation. Officers and detectives canvased the area for surveillance cameras and searched for witnesses to develop essential investigative leads. SMPD detectives learned that the stabbing was not a random attack; Towns and Bibbs were known to each other. On May 14, 2022 sometime after 1:40 a.m., Towns and Bibbs had an argument at the bus stop, which resulted in Bibbs stabbing Towns. Several hours later, a community member waiting for the bus observed Towns and called 911.

Through staunch tenacity and determination, SMPD detectives conducted a round-the-clock investigation and were able to identify Bibbs as a suspect promptly.  On May 16, 2022 at approximately 3:45 p.m., with the assistance from the Redwood City Police Department, SMPD arrested Bibbs in Redwood City, CA. Bibbs was a parolee-at-large, had an outstanding warrant, and failed to register as a sex offender. Additionally, Bibbs has two previous convictions for stabbing a person. He has a 2020 conviction for stabbing a person at a bus stop and a 2013 conviction for stabbing another occupant in a vehicle.

SMPD detectives are actively working this investigation. No tip is too small in this case. If you were driving in the area, have an in-car camera, or saw anything out of the ordinary, please contact the police immediately at (650) 522-7700.
