Santa Rosa Man Arrested for Attempt Homicide after Shooting

On Sunday, May 22, 2022, at 11:18 p.m., the Santa Rosa Police Department received a call from an area resident about a shooting that just occurred.  The resident heard yelling and a gunshot in the 1700-block of Greeneich Ave. When officers arrived on the scene, they located an adult male lying near the curb, on the south side of the roadway. The male appeared to have been shot one time, in the upper part of the torso. Emergency medical services arrived on the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.  The victim is a 27-year-old male from Santa Rosa.  The victim is currently in serious condition but expected to survive his injuries. No additional information will be released about the victim.

Detectives from the SRPD Violent Crimes Team took over the investigation and Field and Evidence Technicians processed the crime scene. Detectives and officers interviewed witnesses and obtained additional evidence. Detectives believe the suspect and the victim knew each other because, before the shooting, they were both seated in a parked red Ford Expedition. The suspect was seated in the driver’s seat and the victim was seated in the back of the Ford, behind the suspect. For an unknown reason, the suspect and victim were arguing. The suspect got out of the Ford, opened the rear passenger door, and yelled at the victim.  The suspect then shoots the victim and pulled the victim out of the vehicle.  The suspect got back into the vehicle and drove away. As the suspect pulled away, he drove over the victim’s feet.

At 11:39 p.m., an SRPD patrol officer located a red Ford Expedition driving near Marlow Road and Yuma Street. The officer attempted a traffic stop on the Ford, but the driver initially refused to pull over.  When the driver did pull over, he ran from the vehicle but was quickly caught and arrested.

The suspect, Jose Figueroa Baltazar, a 28-year-old Santa Rosa resident, was arrested for:

  • 664/187 PC – (Felony) Attempted Homicide
  • 245(a)(1) PC – (Felony) Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • 186.22(a) PC – (Felony) Participating in a Criminal Street Gang While Committing a Crime
  • 186.22(b)(1) PC – (Felony) Participating in a Criminal Street Gang While Committing a Violent Felony
Baltazar was later transported and booked into the Sonoma County jail for the above charges.
