Mass Shootings – It Is Up To Us

So now it is Uvalde Texas; 19 children and 2 teachers dead, leaving unimaginable grief and loss for families and community.

This year alone in the United States there have been 27 school shootings. This year alone, there have been 212 mass shootings. A mass shooting is defined as 4 or more killed in a single event. In 2021, America suffered 693 mass shootings.

In almost all of these mass shooting events, others knew that the suspect may act but chose not to call authorities, which could have prevented the tragedies.

Our officers prepare for active shooter events by spending hundreds of hours in training to assure that we will have an immediate response and entry designed to stop the shooting. All public schools in the city have police radios assigned so that school officials can immediately summon officers to their school, saving precious minutes and reducing shooting victims. Schools are trained in lockdown procedures to limit the number of shooting victims until officers arrive.

While we are prepared to respond to an active shooter event, we prefer to avoid the tragedy. We urge citizens to call us if you know of someone that is struggling and needs help. Contact us with your suspicions and place the burden and responsibility on us.

You can call the Janesville Police Department at (608) 755-3100, non-emergency dispatch at (608) 757-2244, Janesville Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 756-3636, or you can download the FREE “P3 tips” app at the Apple store or Google play store to give crime tips ANONYMOUSLY.

Janesville is our community. It is up to all of us to help one another. Let’s not allow the tragedy to come to us.
