Pursuit and Arrest of Theft Suspect

On May 25, 2022, at around 7:50 p.m., Santa Rosa Police Officers were dispatched to the AT&T store in the 2100 block of Santa Rosa Avenue regarding a theft that had occurred of multiple iPhones.  The suspect had reportedly fled the area in a black Honda SUV.
A responding police sergeant located the vehicle in the area of Highway 101 and Corby Avenue and attempted to make an enforcement stop to investigate the crime that had just occurred.  The vehicle did not stop and took off at a high-rate of speed.  Santa Rosa Police Officers began pursuing the vehicle which ultimately got onto Highway 101 and headed southbound.  The suspect vehicle exited the freeway at Todd Road, and officers pursued the vehicle for several blocks on surface streets, before the vehicle got back onto southbound Highway 101.   The officers continued to pursue the vehicle which due to the light traffic on the roadway was able to reach speeds up to 100 miles per hour.
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office provided the assistance of their helicopter which was able to monitor the pursuit and provided updated information to officers.
When the pursuit reached the area of the southern county line, The California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit.  Santa Rosa Police Officers terminated the pursuit, while California Highway Patrol Officers continued to pursue the vehicle.
The pursuit ended in the area of San Rafael when the driver of the vehicle exited the freeway and pulled over by  Lincoln Avenue.  California Highway Patrol Officers took the driver into custody; a 17-year-old juvenile male was also in the vehicle.
The suspect was identified as, Gregory Dawson, a 43-year-old San Francisco resident.  Shortly after being arrested, he had a medical emergency unrelated to the pursuit or arrest and was transported to a San Rafael Hospital.  Due to his medical conditions, he was cited and released at the hospital on the following charges:
§ 2800.2 VC- Evading a Peace Officer
§ 487(a) PC-Grand Theft
§ 273(a)(b) PC-Child Endangerment
§ 3455-Post Release Community Supervision Violation
The juvenile in the vehicle was released to his guardian.
The stolen phones were estimated to exceed $3,000.00 in value.
We would like to thank our allied law enforcement agencies for assisting us with the investigation and taking the suspect into custody.
