Scams/Other

Gift Card Scam

On Monday, 05-16-22, at approximately 12:00 p.m., a 52-year old Daly City resident was the victim of a gift card scam. The victim stated she was at home and checking her email on her computer and noticed an email from “Norton Security” advising that she owed $400 for her subscription. The victim called the “Norton Security representative” with the phone number provided in the email. The “representative” told the victim that she owed $4,000 (contradicting the amount of $400 that was stated in the email), and if she didn’t pay it, she would be placed under arrest. The victim was scared that she would be arrested and purchased eight American Express gift cards loaded with $500 each. The victim then provided the “representative” with all the gift card numbers. The victim realized she had been scammed after she asked a friend for advice the following day.

Zelle Scam

On Friday, 05-20-22, at approximately 6:00 p.m., a 62-year old Daly City resident received a phone call from a suspect claiming to be from the “Bank of America Fraud Department” stating that there was suspicious activity on the victim’s checking account. The victim said that the caller ID showed “Bank of America” and the suspect knew some of his personal information, including his name, telephone number, and the first four numbers of his account. The suspect convinced the victim to transfer funds from his checking account back to himself to “protect his money.” The suspect instructed the victim to Zelle, a third-party money transfer application. The victim authorized a $1,000 transfer and then an additional $2,500 transfer. After the second transfer, the suspect hung up the phone and the victim tried calling the number back, but it did not work.

Bait and Switch Scam

On Monday, 05-16-22, at approximately 11:00 a.m., a 63-year old Daly City resident said that she walked to the northeast corner of Hanover Street and Templeton Avenue and then a black SUV had stopped along the northern side of Hanover Street. The driver asked if he could sell the victim something and the victim replied, “No.” The driver then stated his wife, who was sitting in the rear behind the passenger seat of the SUV, wanted to speak with the victim. The victim then crossed Hanover Street and approached the car’s rear passenger window. The female suspect stated, “God bless you,” and reached out to embrace the victim. Both suspects then drove away southbound on Hanover Street. When the victim returned to her residence, she realized that her gold necklace, valued at $1,000, was missing and she was instead wearing an unknown gold necklace.

Youth Unlimited Pilot Program

In partnership with the San Mateo County Office of Education, SamTrans is launching a six-month pilot program from January 1 through June 30, 2022. Known as the Youth Unlimited pilot program, it provides free SamTrans bus fares for Socioeconomically Disadvantaged (SED) students, as defined by the California Department of Education. SED students include students that are eligible for the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program, students experiencing homelessness, foster-youth, migrant students, and students whose parents did not graduate high school.

The overall goals of the program are to reduce transportation costs for low-income families, attract new and more frequent riders, and understand the potential operational impacts of providing free fares to some or all youth riders.

How do I get a Youth Unlimited pass?
School districts and individual schools are responsible for distributing the passes to eligible students. Contact your school if you believe you are eligible and haven’t received a pass.

What SamTrans bus routes serve my school?
Visit www.samtrans.com/schedulesandmaps/Get2School.html to see what bus routes serve each school, or call SamTrans Customer Service at 1-800-660-4287.

Will this program continue next school year?
SamTrans will evaluate the financial and operational impact of the pilot program before proposing to implement this program permanently next school year.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
