Suspect arrested for five sexual assaults

Berkeley Police Department along with our neighboring agencies, the Oakland and Albany Police Department would like to announce the arrest of Tommy Giles Jr. Giles Jr. was placed under arrest for various sexual assault and kidnapping charges due to the following cases in Albany, Berkeley and Oakland.  

On March 30th, 2022, between 8:00 am and 8:30 am, a 9-year-old victim was sexually assaulted by an unknown suspect, who claimed to have a knife. The victim was sexually assaulted in the City of Albany, while walking to school. Albany PD Case #22-428.

On April 14th, 2022, around 1:00 pm, Berkeley Police Department Officers responded to a kidnapping and sexual assault that occurred near the 500 block of Colusa Ave., in Berkeley.  The suspect kidnapped the 23-year-old female victim, using threats of a knife.  The victim was forced to orally copulate the suspect.  Evidence in this case was recovered from the scene.  Berkeley PD Case #22-17136.

On April 29th, 2022, between 9:20 am and 9:40 am, a 23-year-old victim was walking in the City of Oakland, when she was grabbed by the suspect, using threats of a knife.  The suspect kidnapped, sexually battered and forced the victim to orally copulate him.  Oakland PD Case #22-19816.

On May 21st, 2022 around 1230 hours, a 60-year-old female victim reported that she was sexually battered by an unknown suspect in the area of Stannage Ave. and Cedar Street.  The victim took photographs of the back of the suspect and posted them to a neighborhood website, gaining the attention of Berkeley residents.  The suspect was identified as Tommy Giles Jr., by a Berkeley citizen.  This information was reported to the Berkeley Police Department on 5/23/2022.  Berkeley PD Case #22-23408.

On May 24th, 2022 at 8:28 am, a 14-year-old victim was walking to school in the City of Albany. The suspect approached the victim and threatened the victim, claiming he had a knife. The suspect sexually assaulted the victim.  Albany PD Case #22-651.

On May 24th, 2022, Giles Jr. was taken into custody on the above Berkeley sexual battery case (# 22-23408).  Giles Jr. was interviewed by BPD Sex Crimes Detectives and admitted his involvement in the sexual battery incident that occurred on May 21st, 2022.  During this interview, further information and evidence was obtained in relation to the above cases.  This case was documented under Berkeley PD Case #22-23408.

Based on evidence from all involved cases, it was determined that Giles Jr. was the suspect in all five sexual assaults. On 05/26/2022, Giles Jr. was arrested on various sexual assault and kidnapping charges and booked into the Berkeley City Jail.  

On May 27th, 2022, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Giles Jr. with PC 287(c)(2)(b)- felony attempt oral copulation on a child under 14 years old, PC 288(b)(1)- felony forcible lewd acts with a child, PC 314- misdemeanor indecent exposure, PC 220(a)(1)- felony assault with attempt to commit sex crime, PC 288(c)(2)(a)- felony force oral copulation (times 2), PC 243.4(a)- felony sexual battery by restraint, PC 243.4(e)(1)- misdemeanor sexual battery, PC 209(b)(1)- felony kidnapping to commit sex crime or robbery, PC 288(c)(1)- felony lewd act upon child. All charges include additional enhancements for kidnapping and or weapons violations.    

Although Giles Jr. has been placed under arrest, the Berkeley Police Department would like to encourage any additional potential victims to contact Berkley Police Department Sex Crimes Unit at (510) 981-5735 or their respective police agency in the city, in which the crime occurred if they have a crime that has not been reported to police involving this same suspect.

Berkeley PD would like to give a special thank you to our neighboring agencies in Oakland and Albany for their assistance and collaboration in this investigation.  Berkeley PD would also like to thank Serological Laboratory for their timely assistance with forensics linking these cases together.
