As you likely know, DOT’s contractor is in the process of constructing two roundabouts on Carman Road, starting first with the new roundabout at Carman Road’s intersection with the I-890/Thruway interchange in Rotterdam. DOT has issued a travel advisory that Carman Road (State Route 146) will be closed from Wayto Road to Marra Drive in Rotterdam from 8pm on Friday, June 3 until 6am on Monday, June 6. DOT states that the properties in this closed area will still be accessible. DOT’s advisory sets forth recommended detour routes which will also be marked by electronic message boards. If you travel through this intersection on weekends, please take the time to familiarize yourself with the recommended detours.
Later this year, DOT’s contractor will construct the project’s second roundabout which will replace the existing traffic signal at Carman Road and Lydius Street and also install new sidewalk that will complete a pedestrian connection on Carman Road from the new roundabout to Coons Road and Pine Bush Elementary School. Carman Road will also be repaved from Coons Road and the existing roundabout at Curry Road in Rotterdam. This construction will also require additional weekend closures on Carman Road. I will share details about this second roundabout when made available by DOT’s onsite engineer,
The $5.4 million project is funded by a Federal highway safety program. Roundabouts are engineered to maximize safety and minimize congestion, and compared to traditional intersections, traffic flows more freely, and reduces congestion and commute times. Crashes at roundabouts tend to be less severe because they typically occur at slower speeds. The reduced vehicle idling time also means fewer fuel emissions, improves air quality, eliminates electric-powered traffic signals, and allow for landscaped centers.
Please take a moment today to remember our fellow citizens who have served our country in uniform and the ultimate sacrifice offered by women and men who died defending our nation.
I hope that you are having an enjoyable and relaxing long weekend.
Thank you for staying safe and calm.
