Coronavirus (COVID-19) Eight Hundred Fifteenth Update, Tuesday, May 31, 2022

In a press release today, Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy reported today that there were 51 new positive cases overnight in the County, which raised the County’s COVID-19 cumulative pandemic total to 72,516 positive cases.  The County’s seven-day average of new daily positive cases increased from 122.4 to 126.1 cases.  The number of County residents in the hospital overnight due to COVID-19 symptoms remained at 48 patients, with four patients in the ICU.  The County DOH’s pandemic death toll remained at 563.

The County Executive added:

Today’s COVID update leaves us room for optimism with a number of indicators trending in the right direction.  Not only are there no new deaths to report since the last update on Friday, but the number of cases per 100,000 and our percent positivity continue to decline, we’re seeing fewer daily hospitalizations and the total number of residents currently hospitalized is remaining stable.

I’m encouraging residents to get vaccinated and get the booster shot if they haven’t yet, to get tested and report at-home COVID tests, and to stay home if they’re feeling sick.  Continuing to take important precautions – especially for those with underlying health conditions and weakened immune systems – will help us build on this progress.

State DOH reported that the County’s rate for one vaccine dose as of yesterday was 81.5% of the County’s total population and 91.9% of the adult population, and the County’s rate for full-vaccination was 74.5% of the total population, and for boosters was 63.9% of the eligible population.  The State’s rate for one dose was 90.6% for the total population and 95.0% of adults, and the State’s rate for full-vaccination was 77.4% for the total population, and for boosters was 55.5% of the eligible population.

The State’s COVID-19 website reported that yesterday’s results for 37,244 tests Statewide were 3,233 or 9.4% positive, with the seven-day average decreasing to 6.8%.  The Capital Region had 1,582 tests of which 184 or 12.3% were positive, with the seven-day average decreasing to 9.6%.  The County had 446 tests of which 44 or 11.1% were positive, with the seven-day average decreasing to 10.9%.  The holiday weekend’s numbers of tests were roughly 20% of the usual numbers.

In a press release today, Governor Kathy Hochul reported the State’s positive rate for tests yesterday (9.43%), and the current numbers for COVID-19 hospitalizations (2,426, -57), new hospital admissions (405), ICU patients (231, -3), intubations (88, -7), and 26 deaths.

The Governor also announced the return of "On the Canals" excursions along the State’s canal system.  The free recreational programs include kayaking, cycling, cruising, painting, birding, and accessible activities such as adaptive paddling and biking.  The program’s activities also take advantage of the adjoining Empire State Trail.

The Western Turnpike Golf Course’s 2022 season is off to a wonderful start, and while the weather has played a role, the course’s excellent condition is largely the result of careful planning and hard work by a dedicated staff.   This Memorial Day weekend was the busiest in anyone’s memory.   It is very easy to book a tee-time online.  I thank Golf Pro Casey Childs and Golf Associate Joe Lavigna for providing the setting for an enjoyable experience for players.

And speaking of weather, our temperature roller coaster continues with one day today in the 90s, and falling back again tomorrow, and for the foreseeable future, into the 70s.  It is perfect weather for enjoying the Town’s expanding system of hiking trails

Thank you for staying safe and calm.
