BLIGHT ENFORCEMENT

BLIGHT ENFORCEMENT

Most residents take pride in the appearance of their property. Keeping everything clean and tidy benefits everyone, from increased property values and more enjoyable scenery to better relations between neighbors.

Unfortunately, some who don't meet the community's expectations just don't care—more times than not, though, those who fall short simply need a little help. Either way, the Sumpter Township ordinance department is out and about addressing blight throughout the township.

The process is this— once the ordinance officer observes a blight situation, contact is made with the property owner to discuss what needs to be done to correct it. A 10-day window is established, and if noticeable progress is made within that timeframe, we will continue working closely with the owner to bring the property up to standards. If acceptable progress is not achieved during that time, an ordinance violation will be issued.

While the case is making its way through the court process, the ordinance officer will continue monitoring the property and report back to the court with any progress, or lack thereof. Please remember that our goal is simple compliance with the ordinance, not a fine for the property owner or a drawn-out court case.

Here are a few examples of the most common blight issues we see:

• Unlicensed or Inoperable vehicles stored outside

• Household or construction debris

• Furniture, mattresses, or any other large items left by the roadway for rubbish pickup without first making arrangements with Republic Services for a "special pickup."

• Failure to keep roadside ditches clear of any debris that could restrict water flow.

• Grass or weeds taller than 8 inches on any residential property.

If you have a neighbor whose property needs help or are the owner of a blighted property but don't know how to begin the cleanup process, please don't hesitate to contact the ordinance department at 734-740-0059 or email at [email protected]. We have several avenues available to assist in the cleanup.

We appreciate your efforts in making Sumpter Township a more attractive community for all to enjoy.
