Last night, the FDA stated that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for children under 6 years of age was effective in preventing symptomatic infection without side effects. The FDA noted that the effectiveness of Moderna’s pediatric vaccine was based on relatively few positive cases in this age group and that a booster would also likely be required to maintain its efficacy. The FDA’s advisory committee is scheduled to meet next week on recommending emergency authorization for Moderna’s vaccine for children aged 6 months to 17 years. It will also consider Pfizer’s application for its pediatric vaccine for children under 5 years.
