Advisory

Statement on Earlier School Shelter in Place

Earlier today at approximately 2:00 PM, South River Police Department personnel responded to the South River Middle School for a report of a student in possession of a knife. The alleged knife was reported to be seen in the student’s school bag however, at no point was it reported to be used to threaten any students or staff. Upon receiving this report, school staff notified our department and immediately initiated shelter in place protocols at the elementary and middle school.

In conjunction with school administration, security cameras were reviewed and the school was searched. It was determined the student had no weapon and there was no threat to school students and staff. The shelter in place was subsequently lifted after approximately 24 minutes. Out of an abundance of caution, an additional police presence was maintained in the area during dismissal.

Please note that the New Jersey State Police helicopter landing at the school earlier in the day was in relation to a pre-planned school event and was not related to this incident.
