Suspect arrested after two people were attacked Downtown

On June 17th, officers arrested a 34-year-old man after he reportedly robbed a person Downtown, hit an elderly person with a construction hard hat along the North Shattuck corridor, caused damage inside a nearby business and threw a brick at a passing vehicle.

On June 17th at 12:13 pm, officers responded to a report of an assault inside McDonalds (1988 Shattuck Avenue).  When they arrived, officers learned that the suspect had taken a customer’s eyeglasses from her face and also taken her cellphone.  When the customer tried to get her belongings back, the suspect punched the customer in her face twice.  When the customer punched the suspect back, the suspect ran away with the customer’s items.

About 11 minutes later, officers received another report of an assault on the 1600 block of Shattuck Avenue with a similarly described suspect.  During this incident, the suspect struck a 78-year-old man in the head with a construction hard hat.  Bike Force officers responded to the area and detained the suspect in the area of Francisco Street and Shattuck Avenue.

While investigating the assaults, officers learned that the suspect had also damaged a trash can and sanitizer dispenser at Cupcakin Bake Shop (1690 Shattuck Ave), and threw a brick at a vehicle in the area of Francisco Street and Shattuck Avenue.

On June 20th, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged the suspect with PC 211—robbery, PC 368(b)(1)—elder abuse causing great bodily injury, PC 594(a)—vandalism, as well as several criminal enhancements.
