SUMMARY:
On June 21, 2022, deputies from the Colorado River Sheriff’s Station / Needles Police were called to the area of 3rd Street and I Street in the city of Needles for a report of a victim shot with a BB gun. Investigation revealed 18-year-old Patrick Zubiate and a male juvenile were passengers in a vehicle and were shooting Orbeez at pedestrians.
Orbeez are gel balls that range in size from 6 to 8 mm and are shot from a gel-ball gun or an airsoft gun. These guns have the potential to cause fear or panic in that some of these gel blaster guns could be mistaken for an actual firearm and cause serious injury if shot at someone’s face. Zubiate was arrested and booked into the Colorado River jail for Penal Code section 242, battery. He was later released with a promise to appear in court. The juvenile suspect and his parent were also issued citations with a promise to appear in the Victorville Juvenile Court.
