- Grand Larceny 4th (E-Felony)
- Petit Larceny (A-Misdemeanor)
- Criminal Tampering 3rd (A-Misdemeanor)
ARRAIGNMENT/BAIL STATUS: Surman was arraigned in Amsterdam City Court in front of Honorable Judge Lisa W. Lorman and was released to re-appear at a later date.
INCIDENT NARRATIVE: On June 13th, 2022 at approximately 8:09 A.M. Amsterdam Police were dispatched to the Amsterdam Post Office for the report of a larceny of a book bag from a US Postal Van. During a canvass of the immediate area patrol members were able to locate the book bag in the alleyway between Market Street and Chuctanunda Street. An interview was conducted with the victim and it was determined items from the book bag were still missing. An additional neighborhood canvas was completed by patrol officers and a suspect description was obtained. Patrol members were then able to secure security footage of the suspect. Following a post on the Amsterdam Police Department Facebook page multiple anonymous tips came in from the public successfully identifying the suspect as Jeffrey A. Surman.
On June 14th, 2022 Surman came to Police Headquarters to turn himself in regarding the above case. Surman was subsequently interviewed and admitted to the theft of the book bag. Surman was processed and held pending arraignment.

While there was probable cause for this arrest, all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
