On May 20, 2022 at about 3:43 p.m., a 7-year-old juvenile was riding a bicycle east bound, in the east bound lane of Jamestown Road while approaching a stop sign controlled entry onto Montrose Ave. The juvenile was wearing a safety helmet at the time and did not slow for the stop sign. The driver of a compact vehicle was traveling north bound on Montrose Ave, while approaching the Jamestown Road 4-way intersection. Montrose Avenue is not stop sign controlled at the intersection of Jamestown Road in this residential neighborhood setting. The juvenile bicyclist and the vehicle collided in the northbound lane of Montrose Ave. A nearby resident notified authorities, and police personnel soon arrived on scene and provided life saving measures to the juvenile until relieved by medical personnel. The juvenile was transported by ambulance to a local trauma center, but ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained from this collision.
The driver of the compact vehicle remained on scene and is fully cooperating with this investigation. Video surveillance footage which captured this collision was also located. During the preliminary steps of this investigation, it does not appear that drugs or alcohol seem to be a factor with the driver of the vehicle. The investigation is still active, but nearing completion.
Fremont Police Department is deeply saddened by this tragedy and sympathizes with the family of the juvenile. As we and the community mourn this traffic loss of life, we would like to take the opportunity to remind the public that pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers share the road, and all have responsibility to be cognizant of roadway conditions and follow all rules of the road.
