Vehicle Theft Leads to Pursuit, Suspect Identification and Charges

Lower Township, NJ - On June 20, 2022 at approximately 10:45 p.m. officers from the Lower Township Patrol Division3 were in the area of the North Cape May Wawa convenience store monitoring local activity.  They observed a vehicle leave the parking lot traveling northbound on Bayshore Road at a high rate of speed with a pedestrian on top of the vehicle.  Shortly after that vehicle left the parking lot, another motor vehicle left the parking lot hastily, in what appeared to be giving chase.
Officers immediately attempted to locate the vehicles as they were traveling at a high rate of speed and quickly were out of the area of North Cape May.  Officers located the above vehicles at the intersection of Bayshore and Fishing Creek Roads, where they observed the second vehicle attempting to block the first vehicle, with the pedestrian still on top.  The first vehicle with the pedestrian on top rammed the second blocking vehicle and began to flee despite Patrol Officer Kevin Boyle, Jr. pursuing with activated lights and siren.
While pursuing the fleeing vehicle from the scene of the motor vehicle crash, officers were informed by Cape May County Communications that there were numerous 9-1-1 calls regarding a stolen motor vehicle from the North Cape May Wawa.  Patrol units initiated a short pursuit with the vehicle observing the vehicle driving at speeds in excess of 90 mph with the pedestrian on top of the vehicle.  Officers observed the driver of the stolen vehicle actively attempting to launch the pedestrian from the vehicle by aggressively swerving the vehicle across both lanes of traffic.  Officers followed the vehicle to the intersection of Bayshore and Fulling Mill Roads where the vehicle turned right (eastbound) onto Fulling Mill Road, ultimately throwing the pedestrian from the vehicle.
Patrol units immediately terminated the pursuit in order to render medical aid to the subject who was later identified as the owner of the stolen vehicle.  He stated he was attempting to stop the theft of his car. The stolen vehicle was a black in color Ford Edge.  A description was given of the driver as a dark skin male.  The vehicle was observed by other patrol officers traveling north onto the Garden State Parkway out of Lower Township.
The Lower Township Detective Bureau conducted an intense and thorough follow-up investigation that identified the suspect as Woodrow Gibson, age 19, of East Orange New Jersey.  Mr. Gibson was subsequently charged on a warrant with Carjacking a 1st Degree Crime, Robbery a 2nd Degree, Aggravated Assault a 2nd Degree Crime, Eluding a 2nd Degree Crime, Aggravated Assault While Eluding Police a 2nd Degree Crime, Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon a 3rd Degree Crime, Theft of Means Of Conveyance a 3rd Degree Crime, Theft of Moveable Property a 3rd Degree Crime, Theft of Moveable Property a 3rd Degree, Assault By Auto a Disorderly Persons Offense.
The victim’s vehicle was located in Camden, New Jersey and later returned to the victim.  Mr. Gibson was also arrested on unrelated charges in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania and is currently incarcerated in the Bucks County Correctional Facility pending his extradition to New Jersey.
