     The Grosse Pointe Farms Department of Public Safety is informing residents of a scam attempt that occurred today to a Grosse Pointe Woods resident.  The GPW resident received a phone call from a male subject with a heavy accent, identifying himself as a police officer and asking for personal information.  The GPW resident suspected a fraud attempt may be occurring and contacted Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety.  The GPW resident stated that his caller ID displayed our Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety Department non-emergency number, which is (313)-885-2100. This type of scam is called “Caller ID spoofing.”

     Caller ID spoofing is the practice of falsifying information about an incoming call on the receiver's caller ID display. Scammers will manipulate the caller ID so that the call appears to be coming from a local or well-known phone number, making it more likely to be trusted or answered.

     The Grosse Pointe Farms Department of Public Safety would like to inform everyone that we would never request money or personal information over the telephone. If you believe this type of scam is occurring to you, please hang up and call our department back from your own telephone/cell line.
