On Sunday, 06-26-22, a 54-year-old Daly City resident received a phone call from a suspect claiming to be her “cousin.” The suspect pretending to be her "cousin" said he had flown into California for a business trip, but was detained by Customs for a violation he had committed in Mexico. The suspect told the victim that she needed to send $780 so that he would be able to pay the fine and get released. The victim then spoke to an unknown female claiming to be a “U.S. Customs Agent.” The victim used the Western Union mobile app to send the money. After sending the money, the “cousin” called the victim back and offered to pay the money back to her and would later respond to her residence to pay her. The victim contacted her family in Mexico and learned that her cousin was in Mexico and had never flown to the U.S. The victim realized that she was scammed and ceased all communication with the suspect.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up. I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access a neighborhood if they don’t live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try!  www.nextdoor.com
