ROHNERT PARK – On Friday, July 1, 2022 at approximately noon, the Rohnert Park Public Safety Dispatch Center received several 911 calls reporting a pedestrian was struck by a passing vehicle on Rohnert Park Expressway, several hundred feet east of San Simeon Drive. Police and Fire personnel from the Rohnert Park Dept of Public Safety arrived on scene and located a deceased elderly male lying in the roadway.
The preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian, an 82-year-old Rohnert Park resident, was walking southbound across Rohnert Park Expressway through the center median and into the path of an oncoming Ford sedan. The Ford was travelling eastbound in the number one lane of Rohnert Park Expressway.
The collision was witnessed by several passersby who reported the pedestrian was not in an area supported by a crosswalk or any traffic control signals. The driver remained on scene after the collision and cooperated with the investigation. Drugs and/or alcohol were not a factor in the collision.
Due to the severity of the collision, the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was summoned to conduct the investigation. A section of eastbound Rohnert Park Expressway between San Simeon Drive and Snyder Lane was closed for approximately three hours to allow investigators to process the scene. The names of the driver and decedent are not being released at this time as this is an active investigation.
The Department of Public safety sends our condolences to the decedent and his family and to those of the driver as well.
