INCIDENT: Fatal Hit and Run Traffic Collision
LOCATION: Baseline Street and McKinley Avenue, Highland, CA
SUSPECT(S): Kyle Cornwell, 24-year-old, Highland resident (White 1999 Dodge Ram)
VICTIM(S): 56-year-old Male, Highland resident
SUMMARY: On Saturday, July 2, 2022, at approximately 10:07 p.m., deputies from the Highland Station, and medical personnel from CalFire and American Medical Response, responded to the area of Baseline Street and McKinley Avenue for a traffic collision. Upon arrival, deputies found a male unresponsive and lying in the middle of Baseline Street. The victim suffered critical injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Witnesses saw a white Dodge Ram flee the area immediately following the collision. Evidence was located at the scene that led deputies to the Dodge owner's residence. Deputies contacted the owner of the Dodge and discovered Kyle Cornwell had been driving the truck at the time of the collision. Cornwell was located and interviewed about the collision. Cornwell was arrested for CVC 20001(a): Felony Hit-and-Run and was booked into the Central Detection Center.
Investigators from the Region 1, Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. The intersection of Baseline Street and McKinley Avenue was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene and collected evidence.
