The following is a summary of criminal activity in El Cerrito. It does not include all crimes. It also does not include non-criminal events such as missing persons, traffic collisions, non-criminal deaths, non-criminal disputes, nor many other police activities that do not result in arrest.
June 28th
Theft by False Pretenses – 500 block of Elm St:
At 8:41 AM, an officer reports the victim was contacted about her house cleaning business by the suspect via Whatsapp. An agreement was struck for house cleaning services and the suspect mailed a check for $2500, instructing the victim to keep $200 for her fee and pay the rest to the painter who would be working at the house that was to be cleaned. The victim transferred $2300 to someone claiming to be the painter via Zelle, then the check bounced.
Vehicle Tampering – 2000 block of Tapscott Ave:
At 8:50 AM, an officer reports a hole was drilled in the victim’s gas tank and part of the contents were drained and stolen between 9:00 PM on 6/27 and 8:20 AM on 6/28.
False Personation – 9996 San Pablo Ave (Mechanic’s Bank):
At 12:46 PM, an officer reports a 50 year old El Cerrito woman attempted to open a bank account in the name of person for whom she had periodically provided care and cleaning services, using various identity documents belonging to the victim. She was unsuccessful in opening the account. The victim was contacted by telephone in the ICU at Kaiser and was not coherent enough to provide a useful statement, but insisted she did not desire prosecution. Follow up will be conducted if the victim reaches a sufficient level of mental clarity to provide a statement.
Vandalism – 7700 block of Potrero Ave:
At 4:36 PM, an officer reports an unidentified suspect attempted to enter the victim vehicle by prying the driver door lock between 6/27 at 10:00 AM and 6/28 at 10:00 AM, causing an estimated $500-1000 in damage. No apparent entry was made.
Battery – 11545 San Pablo Ave (Ross):
At 9:01 PM, an officer reports an employee and a customer got into an argument over the price of an item. The customer bought the item but then returned and threw water onto the employee and then fled.
June 29th
Vandalism – 2000 block of Tapscott Ave:
At 11:10 AM, an officer reports a 59 year old El Cerrito woman keyed her ex-husband’s car in anger after he left the car at the house and took her car, which happened to also be registered to him.
Residential Burglary – 500 block of Oak St:
At 4:52 PM, an officer reports an unidentified suspect entered the victim’s apartment via the front door and stole a television, play station and games, and several bags worth $1500 sometime on Friday.
Driving Under the Influence – 10787 San Pablo Ave:
At 4:58 hours, an officer reports the arrest of a 50 year old El Cerrito man for DUI after he was stopped while driving northbound on the southbound sidewalk in front of Paul’s Shop. A blood draw search warrant was obtained after the man refused to provide a blood or breath sample. The man was cited and released to a sober acquaintance.
Shoplift – 2000 El Cerrito Plaza (Ross):
At 7:15 PM, an officer reports 2 unidentified suspects stole clothes worth $300 and left the store without paying for the items.

At 8:35 PM, an officer reports 2 suspects stole ladies lingerie worth $200 and left the store without paying for the items.
Vehicle theft – 1800 block of Key Blvd:
An officer reports an unknown suspect stole the victim’s 2000 blue Honda Civic. The theft occurred on 06/29 between 5:00 AM and 8:42 PM.
Grand Theft – 11575 San Pablo Ave (Church’s Chicken):
An officer reports an unknown suspect entered an unlocked semi-truck and stole the victims Iphone and backpack ($1460).
June 30th
Shoplift – 10794 San Pablo Ave (Marshall’s):
At 1:11 PM, an officer reports an unidentified suspect stole a backpack and clothing worth $212 and left without paying.
Brandishing – 11687 San Pablo Ave (Valero):
At 2:06 hours, an officer reports an unidentified suspect entered the Valero station asking for water and sugar. The man was provided a cup of water and a few packets of sugar and left the store. The man returned a few minutes later, having left his cane behind. The man then raised his cane above his head with both hands as if he was going to strike the clerk, and made accusations of racism, then he left the store again. He was last seen toward Skechers. The suspect was a white male in his 50’s, wearing a red and yellow shirt and black jeans.
Counterfeit Bills – 11565 San Pablo Ave (Walgreen’s):
At 2:21 PM, an officer reports an unidentified suspect attempted to reload a reusable debit card by paying with two poorly counterfeited hundred dollar bills. When the clerk said she was calling the police, the man fled the store without the fake bills.
Vehicle Theft – 7200 block of Waldo Ave:
A CSO reports a green 1999 Honda Civic (7YZC656) was stolen between 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM on 6/28.
Identity Theft – 7400 block of Stockton Ave:
At 3:15 PM, an officer reports the victim’s lost or stolen debit card was used at Target in Berkeley, Walgreen’s in Berkeley, and attempted at Target in Albany but declined. Total loss was $466.22, but all uses of the card occurred outside El Cerrito. An identity theft report was taken, and the victim was referred to the Berkeley Police Department for the theft reports.
