Happy 4th of July from NPD + Safety Tips

Happy 4th of July from the Newark Police Department!

We want to remind folks, ONLY "Safe & Sane" fireworks are allowed in Newark and ONLY between midnight June 30 to midnight July 4

"Dangerous" fireworks are ALWAYS illegal and Newark has a zero tolerance for them

As a rule of thumb, "dangerous" fireworks can be described as sky rockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, aerial shells, firecrackers and other types that explode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable manner.
Fines for illegal firework use can be up to $1,000 and/or 6 months in jail
This year the Newark City Council adopted an ordinance adding Chapter 7.24, Fireworks Social Host Ordinance to the Newark Municipal Code. The Fireworks Social Host Ordinance establishes strict liability for social hosts that allow the deployment of illegal fireworks on their property or at their hosted gatherings. The City of Newark is authorized to issue administrative citations of up to $1,000 PER violation.

To report illegal fireworks you can now call EITHER:⠀
- The Fireworks Hotline at (866)520-7233 (SAFE)⠀
- NPD Non-emergency at (510) 578-4237

For emergencies please continue to call 911

Safety tips to keep in mind for the “Safe & Sane” fireworks :
- Always have adult supervision when using fireworks ⠀
-  After a firework has been used, soak it in water before discarding ⠀
- Always keep a garden hose and a bucket of water on hand when using fireworks⠀
- If one of your fireworks malfunctions, do not attempt to re-light it. properly dispose of it
- Never light fireworks indoors nor in or around dry grass ⠀
- Avoid lighting fireworks around children ⠀
- Make sure to only light one firework at a time ⠀

For those with pets:
-Play ambient noise like the tv or radio
-Utilize pet enrichment activities (i.e. dog puzzles, lick mats, dog chews, etc)
-Make sure your pets have ID collars and are microchipped. This makes it easier to reconnect you to your pet should they get out.
-Bring your pets inside.
-Put cotton balls in your dog’s years
