Important Health Information:
The Springfield storm and sewer system overflowed into the Connecticut and Chicopee Rivers on July 12, 2022 between 6:05 pm and 9:55 pm. It is estimated that 11.5 million gallons of un-treated sewage flowed into the rivers. An additional release occurred as a result of the rain event July 13 to 14, 2022. This event resulted in approximately 8.6 million gallons of untreated sewage getting into the Connecticut River. Public Health officials recommend avoiding contact with these waterbodies for 48 hours after the discharge ceases due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants. The discharge consists of rainwater and untreated sewage and waste. Activities to avoid include, but are not limited to, swimming, wading, fishing, kayaking and canoeing.
