Veteran Street Naming Ceremony Saturday

STREET NAMING CEREMONY SATURDAY

All are invited to attend the Township of South Brunswick street naming ceremony this Saturday, July 16, at 12:30 PM for Richard Burchnall to honor his memory with the dedication of Starling Road and Hastings Road as “Burchnall Way.”

During World War 2, Mr. Burchnall enlisted at the age of 17 in the United States Army. He received orders to active duty on his 19th birthday.

Sergeant Burchnall volunteered for parachute duty. He was assigned to the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed ''The Screaming Eagles".

The 2001 miniseries “Band of Brothers” sought to represent the experience of the 506th.

Sergeant Burchnall served as a combat squad leader during the War. He served in the Rhineland Campaign, which was the Allied advance from Paris to the Rhine. He served in the Battle of the Bulge, during which he earned the Bronze Star “for exemplary conduct in ground combat against the armed enemy on or about 25 December 1944” and suffered wounds on January 12th, 1945 that led to the award of the Purple Heart. He continued in service, fighting in the Central Europe Campaign, which was the Allied invasion of Germany.

At the end of the war, Sergeant Burchnall, then 21, returned home. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1946.

Among his many military honors are:
  • The Bronze Star Medal is awarded in the name of the President of the United States for heroism in a combat zone
  • The Purple Heart, which is awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed in service
  • The Netherlands Orange Lanyard, which is a unit award also referred to as the Military Order of William, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious military honor.

In 1960, Mr. Burchnall moved to Kendall Park where he lived on Starling Road with his wife, Patricia, and raised six children. He worked at the Veterans Administration Depot in Somerville. He was active in the Knights of Columbus at Saint Augustine’s Church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He was the President of Local 2220 of the Federation of Government Workers & Employees. He also belonged to the National Association of Power Engineers, Local 16.

After his exemplary military service, Mr. Burchnall lived a full life and was committed to his Family & his Community.

So, it is altogether fitting that the Township of South Brunswick gratefully recognizes Mr. Burchnall’s service to the Nation and our Town.

By the dedication of this place to his service, it is our town’s sincerest hope that the memory of Richard Aiken Burchnall endures.
