Press release from Wayne County Prosecutor's Office regarding Kenosha Incident

Harper Woods Man Charged with Mother’s Homicide
 
Today Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jonathan Welch a.k.a. Jonathan Lamont-John Welch, 23, (DOB: 05/06/1999), of Harper Woods*, in connection with the fatal stabbing of his 42-year-old mother, Flossie Bray of Harper Woods.  On July 16, 2022, she was in a local hospital when she succumbed to injuries sustained in the July 10, 2022 attack.

On July 13,2022, he was charged in connection with the homicides of Zlayiah Frazier, 22, of Roseville, and his stepfather Robert Bray Jr., 70, also of Harper Woods. Ms. Frazier was Defendant Welch’s girlfriend and the mother of his one-year-old son. Mr. Bray was the stepfather of Defendant Welch and husband of Flossie Bray.

On July 10, 2022, at approximately 8:14 p.m., at the defendant’s mother’s home in the 20640 block of Kenosha Street in Harper Woods it is alleged that Defendant Welch stabbed his mother in the back multiple times with a butcher knife and killed Ms. Frazier and Mr. Bray with blunt force trauma.

Harper Woods police were called to the scene a set up a perimeter around the home. While setting up the perimeter, officers located the defendant’s one-year-old son in the backyard of the home. Medics transported the child to a local hospital for treatment. It is further alleged that Defendant Welch barricaded himself in the home and fired multiple gunshots at the officers before starting a fire inside and appearing in the front doorway. Officers apprehended the defendant, and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Members of the Harper Woods/Grosse Pointe Woods Fire Departments arrived on scene and extinguished the fire inside the home.

Defendant Welch has now been charged with three counts of First-Degree Murder, three counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, one count of Second-Degree Arson, seven counts of Felonious Assault, and six counts of Felony Firearm. **

He will be arraigned on the First- Degree Murder count for Mrs. Bray at 1:30 p.m. today in 32A District Court at the Probable Cause Conference that is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. before Judge Rebekah Coleman. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Harper Woods Police Department.
 
* Welch, formerly of Detroit, was ordered to live with his mother upon his release from jail.
** The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
