EL CERRITO POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE El Cerrito Police Department Case #2022-0001428

On July 19, 2022, at approximately 12:15 pm, El Cerrito officers responded to the report of gunshots heard in the area of School Street / S. 53rd Street.  Upon arrival, officers located a victim of a gunshot wound in the 900 block of S. 55th Street.  Officers rendered aid until emergency medical services arrived.  The victim was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition.  The suspect in the shooting was reported as fleeing the scene in a vehicle.  The suspect vehicle was located abandoned nearby and simultaneous reports of a subject running through yards back to the shooting scene were received by Dispatch.  A search ensued and the suspect, Daniel Torres, a 32-year-old male, Pittsburg resident, was located hiding in a residence near the shooting scene.  A firearm was recovered in the subsequent investigation.  Torres was booked into the Contra Costa County jail on charges of attempted murder.  A criminal complaint will be sought with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office.
