The charges follow an incident that took place yesterday in the area of the Centennial Park Campground at around 7:52 p.m.

Update 7/21/2022 @ 2:55 PM

At 7:52 PM on July 20, 2022, Anchorage Police Officers were patrolling the Centennial Park Campground located at 8400 Starview Drive when they saw a truck parked in a campsite that matched the description of a vehicle that eluded APD on July 19, 2022.  Both officers exited their vehicles to investigate when they observed an adult male, later identified as 32-year-old Iese Gali Jr., walking near the truck.  Officers attempted to contact Gali, but Gali ignored them and walked towards a minivan parked nearby.
Officers ordered Gali to stop; Gali ignored the commands and got into the front passenger seat of the van.  Officers went hands on to extricate Gali from the vehicle.   A struggle ensued during which time Gali produced a firearm and fired at the officers, injuring one.  Both officers returned fire and radioed for backup.
Citizens at the scene provided aid to our injured officer until backup arrived.  Responding officers administered life-saving measures to Gali which medics took over upon their arrival.
A warrant has been served for Iese Gali Jr. for the following charges: Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, and Misconduct Involving a Weapon in the Third Degree. Once Gali is discharged from the hospital, he will be remanded at the Anchorage Jail.
APD is extremely grateful for the witnesses who not only provided aid to our injured officer but stayed at the scene and provided excellent statements of what they had seen.

This investigation is ongoing and we have no further information to release at this time.

7/20/2022 @ 11:30 PM

The preliminary investigation indicates that two Anchorage Police Officers were conducting a security check at Centennial Campground when they encountered an adult male who was suspected of an earlier eluding.

At some point during the encounter, the suspect produced a handgun and gunfire was exchanged.   One officer was shot, and the other officer was uninjured. Both officers returned fire at the suspect.
The suspect was shot multiple times and was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive his injuries. Charges have not been filed at this time but will be forthcoming.
The injured officer was transported to a local hospital. The officer sustained serious injuries but is expected to survive. Please keep our officer and his family in your prayers as he recovers.

Per policy, the state’s Office of Special Prosecutions (OSP) will review the officer’s use of force and determine whether or not it was justified. Once that has been completed, APD Internal Affairs will review the officer’s actions to confirm whether or not there was any violation of policy. As per APD practice, the officers will be placed on four days of administrative leave. Their names will be released publicly 72 hours after the incident.
Once OSP has completed their investigation, their findings will be available for the public to review.

7/20/2022 8:55 PM:

Officers have responded to the 8400 block of Starview Drive for an officer involved shooting investigation.
A heavy police presence will be in the area for several hours as the investigation continues. There are no road closures at this time. Please avoid the area and follow officer’s instructions if you need to be in the vicinity. This is a developing investigation. Depending on the situation, our response may require using a variety of tactics and tools (to include the drone). More information will be forthcoming.
