Car Thief Arrested after Hit and Run

SMPD patrol and traffic officers diligently investigate a hit and run investigation and apprehend the suspect within hours.

On July 23, 2022, at approximately 6:28 a.m., officers responded to Alameda de las Pulgas and Fairfax Avenue on report of a hit-and-run collision. Upon arrival, officers determined the suspect, later identified as Fredy Marroquin Turcios, was driving recklessly in the northbound direction on Alameda de las Pulgas and nearly caused several collisions. A driver traveling northbound on Alameda de las Pulgas, observed the suspect swerve into his lane. The driver moved into another lane to avoid contact with the suspect. As the driver attempted to return to his lane, he was struck by the suspect’s vehicle. The impact of the crash sent the driver’s vehicle across the intersection of Alameda de las Pulgas and Fairfax Ave. and through a wooden fence of a residence on the 500 block of Fairfax Ave. The vehicle then struck a parked car before coming to rest.

After the crash, the suspect spoke briefly with the driver of the other car before ultimately fleeing the scene. The suspect fled on foot into the yards of residences along the 500 block of Fairfax Ave. SMPD and Burlingame Police conducted an area check for him, but he eluded capture.

SMPD patrol and traffic officers continued their investigation throughout the day. While reviewing video surveillance recorded near the scene of the collision and shortly after it occurred, officers recognized and identified Marroquin Turcois from prior contacts. Additionally, officers noticed that Marroquin Turcois was wearing sporting equipment reported stolen that same day from an unlocked vehicle on the 400 block of Cornell Avenue. Officers also learned the vehicle Marroquin Turcios abandoned at the scene was an unreported stolen vehicle, which was stolen from Laurie Meadows Drive after the owner left the spare key in the center console.

SMPD officers conducted a probation search of Marroquin Turcois at his residence and located the stolen sporting equipment. Marroquin was safely arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail on the charges of hit and run, vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, grand theft, and receiving stolen property.

Remember, “If you see something, say something.” We are encouraging our community to utilize security cameras. They are especially helpful in identifying suspicious activity in neighborhoods when cameras are street facing. Our officers regularly canvass for surveillance and you can help us by notifying SMPD where cameras are located in your neighborhood at www.cityofsanmateo.org/Nest.
